The water was ripping better than usual. Snowmelt runoff had finally started and the recent heavy rains helped give flows an additional boost. Despite this, we still had one thing working for us. It was clear enough to fish.
We floated a section of river that spanned several miles upstream from a major tributary that dumps muddy water into the river and makes it unfishable on days like this. The float takes a while during low water, but not quite as long when it’s flowing like it was today.
With the increased flows and cool weather, the water was chilly enough to keep the fish from doing much, and the fishing was slow. We were finally able to pick a few up by fishing San Juan worms and nymphs weighted down deep in the slow, slow pools.
You know what they say about a bad day’s fishing. Yeah, today was probably better than most work days 🙂
