Streamers: Old School vs. New School

March 1, 2017 by JWood Leave a Comment

The Grey Ghost is a classic Maine streamer.  It’s intended to imitate a rainbow smelt, the primary food source for landlocked salmon.  I use it all the time and fish it with confidence.  It’s worked for generations, but I’m not yet sure whether it’s so popular because it so closely matches a smelt, or because it’s the best that was available at the time.  So it’s fun to experiment with some of the new materials we have today.  I tied up some prototypes with a muskrat zonker strip (back), white rabbit zonker strip (belly) some peacock blend dubbed body and crystal web on the throat. The hooks are nothing special – just some oversized stuff I got for 90% off at the local discount store.  They’re also weighted down with a heavy dose of lead wire.  Should be fun to try out.
